What is a LifeP04 Solar Generator?
A LifeP04 Solar Generator is a solar panel system combined with a LifeP04 battery storage system. LifeP04 is just short hand for a particular type of lithium ion battery. It can generate power using the solar panels, and store it in the battery.
If you’re wondering whether a solar power generator is any good, check out this comparison of solar versus other generators.
Back to solar batteries and lithium ion in particular.
Lithium-ion batteries are a rechargeable battery that come in different chemistries. Each type of Li-ion battery has a special name based on the chemicals it contains. Examples are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), lithium manganese oxide (LMO), and lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2).
Each type of Li-ion battery also has its own unique characteristics and uses. Lithium ion batteries are widely used in electronic devices because they can be charged and used again, which makes them convenient and eco-friendly.
In general, ithium batteries are far more lightweight and energy dense than lead acid, which means you get the same amount of power in smaller packages. This is part of the reason lithium ion has overtaken lead acid as the favoured battery type for household solar PV and battery systems and off grid power supply.
But there are some things that you should know LifeP04 Solar Generators, before you buy your first solar battery and pick between these 3 types of lithium battery chemistry.
At the heart of the LifeP04 Solar Generator, and what sets it apart, is its lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) technology. Next, let’s take a look at the advantages LifeP04 batteries can offer and any shortcomings.
Why choose a LifeP04 Solar Generator?
Cutting-edge LifeP04 technology offers several key advantages over other battery types. Here’s why we recently chose a LifeP04 solar generator over other types:
Better Safety
Safety is a top priority when it comes to lithium ion batteries. The fact is, lithium battery fires can and do happen due to something called ‘thermal runaway’. But LiFePO4 batteries excel in this area. They are considered one of the safest lithium-ion battery chemistries available. The battery chemistry is inherent more stable. So there is a lower risk of thermal runaway leading to fires and other hazards, like overheating and explosions.
Safety is the number one advantage of LifeP04 batteries over other lithium ion batteries.
Long Cycle Life
If you’re looking for a solar battery, you’ve probably had some doubts in your mind. Is it worth the money? How long will a solar battery last me? Will I get enough power from this thing?
Well, a LifeP04 battery is a good purchase to dispel these doubts.
LiFePO4 batteries are known for their long cycle life. Cycle life is just how many times you can discharge and recharge the battery before it dies.
A standard LifeP04 battery will maintain 80% of its charge after 2000 cycles.
Our Ecoflow LifeP04 battery is safe for 3000 cycles and will still have 80% of its charge at that point. Thats just under a cycle a day for 10 years. Compared to lithium, that’s market leading performance.
The longevity of LifeP04 batteries compared to other lithium-ion battery types (like lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) or lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4)) makes them ideal for frequent and sustained use. Like on work sites or road trips.
Fast Charging Capability
Our 800 watt Ecoflow River Pro 2 LiFePO4 battery charges in 1.5 hours. That’s twice as fast as the comparable Bluetti EB70S model.
Whichever model you go with, there is way less down time with a LifeP04 battery. And when you need to rely on your battery as your only power source, you really come to understand how fast that is.
They can also absorb and store energy from multiple different charging sources, including a wall socket, your car battery, solar panels, or via USB-C.
In fact, charging and discharging capability can make or break a battery. And determine whether it’s right for you. So lets talk more about charging and discharging.
High charge and discharge rate
LifeP04 batteries can also handle high discharge rates. A discharge rate is just how much of the battery’s charge you can safely use without damaging the battery cell inside.
You can discharge LifeP04 from 100% down to 10% or even zero for some models.
Other lithium ion batteries have a depth of discharge of 80%. Which you always have to leave that last 20% in the battery. So you get less of from each cycle with other lithium battery types. And you have to charge them more often because of this.
Performance at high temperature
Conventional lithium batteries don’t like to operate when its too hot. But LiFePO4 batteries perform reliably in extreme or high temperatures. They will maintain 80% of their power output even in scorching heat. This characteristic makes them highly suitable for many outdoor and off-grid applications.
Environmental Friendliness
LiFePO4 battery technology is considered environmentally friendly due to its non-toxic and non-hazardous nature. They don’t contain toxic rare metals like cobalt. Instead, the materials used in LiFePO4 batteries are recyclable, reducing the overall environmental impact from with battery production and disposal.
Long shelf life
One important feature of a battery is how long it can hold a charge. Batteries go flat after a while. This is called ‘self discharge’. It’s just the nature of the technology and the chemistry.
So if you juice your battery up ready for the next power outage and put it back on the shelf, you want to know it’s still going to be full when the time comes to use it right?
Or you at least want to know how often you have to recharge it to keep it full.
Well, LiFePO4 batteries also have a lower self-discharge rate compared to other battery types. They lose around 2 to 3% of their charge each month. Compare that with Nickel based batteries that can lose up to 20%!
This means LifeP04 batteries can keep their stored energy for a longer without significant loss. So they’re ideal for applications where long-term storage is required, such as emergency backup power systems.
Just make sure you don’t store them in a hot place. This can accelerate self discharge!
Is LifeP04 better than lithium ion?
Investing in a solar power generator means deciding up front which battery type, brand and model you want. In short, LifeP04 batteries are better than lithium ion when it comes to safety, lifespan, charge/discharge capability and life cycle costs.
Lets compare the top 6 battery features that matter, to find out which is better – LifeP04 or lithium ion. Here’s how a LifeP04 battery sizes up against more conventional lithium ion batteries:

Operating Temperature Range | – Performs well in extreme high temperatures – Degrades in low temperatures | – Degrades in hot temperatures but performs better in colder temperatures. |
Lower Self-Discharge Rate | – Retains stored energy for longer. 2 to 3% self discharge rate per month | – Comparable self discharge rate to LifeP04 |
Cost | – Higher initial cost – More cost efficient over time due to longer lifespan. – Better investment if used frequently. | – Lower initial cost – Shorter lifespan so higher life cycle cost. – Better if you plan to use your battery only occasionally. |
What are the drawbacks of a LifeP04 Solar Generator?
The first is the upfront cost. You’re going to pay more initially for one of these batteries. It’s a bigger investment upfront.
But the economics over time can be better because you get a longer life cycle. So to get the best value from a LifeP04 battery, you need to use its to it’s full life cycle. It becomes more cost effective than other lithium batteries the more you use it.
Down below we look at what this means for you. We also share where (in what situations) a LifeP04 Solar Generator is the best choice.
The second drawback of a LifeP04 battery is that its energy density is not as high as other lithium chemistries. While LifeP04 batteries are 1/5th the weight of a similar lead acid battery, they’re a way behind conventional lithium for energy density.
This just means you need a bigger LifeP04 battery (in size) than you do lithium ion. It’s why you don’t see LifeP04 used in really small electronics like smart phones, laptops or electric bikes. They also take up more space in your home if used in a residential solar battery application.
When is a LifeP04 Solar Generator a good choice?
Overall, LiFePO4 battery technology combines safety, long lifespan, and fast charging and discharging capabilities.
So it’s best when safety is a priority, when you need to use it often, and you can’t afford much downtime.
For us, those features suit applications like remote or onsite work when you need power all day, every day for your tools and equipment.
LifeP04 Solar Generators are also a great option for RVs, caravans and camping for the same reason. No onboard fires and very little downtime makes for a great road trip!
The LIfeP04 technology is great as an all round portable solar generator. Because it’s compatible with 12 volt systems. We use ours to run our 12 volt water pump and other equipment out in the paddock when needed. It’s main use is to run our Tiny House. And it comes in handy as emergency backup power for our wireless internet, which we simply can’t do without.
